Thomas Cup stars Satwiksairaj Rankireddy amd Chirag Shetty pull out of Thailand Open 2022

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have pulled out of the Thailand Open Super 500 tournament, beginning Tuesday, May 17 in Bangkok, where they helped India script Thomas Cup history. The highest-ranked Indian doubles pair will skip the tournament due to injury concerns.

Chirag Shetty suffered a few niggles during the Thomas Cup and the pair informed the Badminton Association of India about their decision to skip the Thailand Open on Monday, according to news agency PTI.

Satwik and Chirag, ranked No. 8, were in terrific form in the Thomas Cup as they won 5 out of the 6 matches en route India’s glorious run to the top step of the podium in Bangkok. Satwik and Chirag were crucial in India’s quarter-final and semi-final wins over Malaysia and Denmark as they helped level the tie after defeats in the first singles matches.

On Sunday, against Indonesia, Satwik and Chirag saved 4 match points to beat World No. 1/2 pairing of Kevin Sanjaya and Mohammad Ahsan as India blanked Indonesia 3-0.

Srikanth will face Brice Leverdez, while HS Prannoy, who had pulled off wins in the deciding third singles in the knockout stages, meets Malaysia’s Daren Liew.

Tokyo Olympian B Sai Praneeth will lock horns with Japan’s Koki Watanabe, while Sourabh Verma faces France’s Toma Junior Popov.

In women’s singles, double Olympic medallist P V Sindhu will be playing a qualifier, while Saina Nehwal will be pitted against Korea Kim Ga Eun.
