Sri Lanka ex-PM, family take shelter at naval base amid massive protests

Sri Lanka’s former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and some of his family members are taking shelter at the Trincomalee Naval Base amid massive protests.

Protests erupted at the Trincomalee Naval Base in Sri Lanka after it was known that the former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and some of his family members were taking shelter, as per sources.

As per a media report by NewsWire, after leaving the official residence in Colombo, the ex-PM and his family members were put up at the naval base. In a tweet, it reported that a protest was underway in front of the Trincomalee Naval Base where it was claimed that former PM Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family members were staying.

On Monday, clashes broke out in the island nation after supporters of Rajapaksa attacked peaceful anti-government protesters who were demanding his ouster. As per the police, five people died in the violence in the nation on Monday.

Hours after the attack, Mahinda Rajapaksa, 76, resigned as prime minister.

As the violence in the country took a grim turn, the Rajapaksa family’s ancestral home in Hambantota was set on fire by protesters.

According to sources, the police fired to stop the mob from breaching the inner security ring of the residence where Rajaspaksa is still holed up with his many loyalists.

The country has been facing the worst economic crisis that led to acute shortages of staple food, fuel and power.
