According to police sources, 30 labourers were engaged in packaging work of salt in Sagar Salt when the wall suddenly collapsed. “The labourers crushed under the wall and there was chaos and screaming everywhere, because of dust nothing was visible for a few minutes.” an eyewitness said. The fire brigade and senior officials of collector’s office and police rushed there. A fire brigade in the rescue operation, found 12 dead bodies while one injured person was admitted in a nearby hospital.
Superintendent of police, Morbi Rahul Tripathi told TOI, “The rooftop was on a quiet height and this brick wall was erected for the partition in a big hall of the factory which was 12 feet in height and 60 to 70 feet in length. We have called a forensic team to check whether it’s an accident or it was a result of negligence.” According to police all the victims belonged to Gujarat only.
The state government has announced Rs 4 lakh ex gratia to the families of deceased in this incident. The state government in a statement said, “Chief minister Bhupendra Patel has expressed deep sorrow for the incident of the Morbi and announced to give financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to the families of the deceased. He also directed the district administration to expedite rescue and relief work.”
