By India Today Web Desk: Former Irish footballer Roy Keane lashed out at Brazil for their goal celebrations in the FIFA World Cup 2022 match against South Korea on Monday, December 5 at Stadium 974 – Ras Abu Aboud.
Brazil defeated South Korea 4-1 in the Round of 16 and made their way through to the quarterfinals where they will lock horns with Croatia, who earlier defeated Japan on penalties at Al Janoub Stadium.
As far as their celebrations are concerned, the Brazilian players, along with subs, formed circles and jumped before showing off their dance moves.
However, the 51-year-old Keane reckoned that the celebrations were highly disrespectful towards the opposition.
“[Fellow pundit] Eni [Aluko] has made the point about culture and it’s their way, but I think it’s really disrespectful to the opposition. It’s 4-0 and they’re doing it every time. I don’t mind the first little jig or whatever it is they’re doing,” Keane was quoted as saying on ITV.
“It’s the one after that, and then the manager getting involved in it! I’m not happy with it. I don’t think it’s good at all. Disrespectful,” he stated.
Former Scottish footballer Ally McCoist, in the meantime, had a different opinion to that of Keane. He said that the Brazilians didn’t do any wrong and it was only their way of showing their delight.
“I can see Roy’s points but I don’t have a problem with it honestly, particularly when it’s the brilliant Brazilians. Maybe it’s wrong to say that only they should be doing it, that’s not the case, I just think the way they’ve performed it just kind of goes hand-in-hand with their football. So I don’t think there’s anything too wrong with it,” McCoist said.
