By India Today Web Desk: Japan skipper Maya Yoshida was gutted after his team failed to advance to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2022. On Monday, December 5, Japan lost to Croatia on penalties at Al Janoub Stadium and crashed out of the mega event in Qatar.

It was the fourth time that Japan qualified for the Round of 16, but couldn’t go beyond that. Yoshida said that defeat against Croatia was a tough pill to swallow.

“Every day, for four years, we worked hard to break this barrier (by reaching the final eight) but we couldn’t get the result we wanted. It’s really hard to take,” Yoshida was quoted as saying after the match.

Japan topped the points table in their group after beating Spain and Germany against all the odds.

Against Croatia, Daizen Maeda scored in the 43rd minute to give Japan a 1-0 lead just before half-time.

However, Japan failed to carry the momentum into the second half. Ivan Perisic scored the equalizer and brought Croatia back into the match.

After the stipulated 90 minutes and stoppage time, the match went into extra time where both teams failed to take the lead.

In the end, Croatia put their best foot forward in the penalties and won it 3-1. Nikola Vlasic and Marcelo Brozovic scored to give Croatia a 2-0 lead in penalties.

Although Marko Livaja couldn’t quite get the ball into the goal, Mario Pasalic put the curtains down with the final penalty of the match. Takumi Minamino, Kaoru Mitoma and Maya Yoshida were the ones who missed penalties for Japan in the shootout.

Croatia will face the winner of the match between Brazil and South Korea in the quarterfinals.
