By India Today Web Desk: Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic said that saving penalties is more about ‘instincts’ than ‘analysis’. On Monday, December 5, the 27-year-old saved three penalties from Takumi Minamino, Kaoru Mitoma and Maya Yoshida and helped Croatia beat Japan in the Round of 16 match at Al Janoub Stadium.

After the first 120 minutes of the game failed to separate the teams, Croatia won the penalty shootout 3-1 and booked their berth in the quarterfinals.

“It’s more an instinct than an analysis of the penalty takers … I don’t think that these penalties were too difficult to defend, (but) they shoot very hard,” Livakovic was quoted as saying in a news conference.

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic also had words of praise for Livakovic for the latter’s incredible piece of goalkeeping under pressure.

“We had a fantastic goalkeeper today, Livakovic, he was great, he was insurmountable, he defended the penalties in a very strong, stable manner,” Dalic said.

“We have 18 new players that weren’t at the Russian World Cup and I told them today — this is your chance to make history,” he stated.

Dalic also said that he would want to meet South Korea instead of Brazil in the last eight.

“We will rest, and I think we have the right to believe and to hope, to nurture hope for great results. We have great quality and a great team, but this World Cup is full of great teams and great peers.”

“We’ll see tomorrow where we stand, we will reflect on the situation, and we shall not surrender. We will keep on fighting, trying to achieve our dream of going further in the World Cup,” Dalic added.

As far as the match was concerned, Daizen Maeda gave Japan a lead in the first-half, but Ivan Perisic pulled off a stupendous header to give Croatia a 1-1 equalizer.
