cmie: India adds 88 lakh new jobs in April but unemployment rate remains higher than March: CMIE report – Times of India

NEW DELHI: India created 88 lakh jobs in April in one of the biggest expansions in the labour market post Covid-19 pandemic shock, even as the unemployment rate remained slightly higher than March, according to the latest report by Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).
With April expansion, India’s working labour force swelled to 43.72 crore, however, the number of jobs created was inadequate to meet the demand, the CMIE report said. This meant that the month also saw an increase in the number of unemployed people pushing the unemployment rate slightly higher than what it was in March.
Given the demography of India, the working-age population cannot grow by more than two lakh a month. This indicates that an overwhelming number of the workers joined back their jobs that they might have had lost under the pandemic impact. India’s labour force had shrunk by 12 lakh the preceding three months.
Industry and service sectors saw maximum increase in opportunities
According to an NBT report, industry and service sectors saw maximum increase in employment opportunities in April. In the industry sector, 55 lakh employment opportunities were created. At the same time, 67 lakh jobs were added in the service sector. Employment in the agricultural sector, however, decreased by 52 lakhs.
Surge in employment augurs well for the general population as it means more wage earners per household at a time when inflation has touched an eight-year-high.
The average monthly increase in the labour force in 2021-22 was 0.2 million. In six of the months of the year, the labour force either shrank by about two million or expanded by the same number. The maximum expansion of eight million was seen in December 2021, the report said.
