banerjee: Coal theft case: SC allows TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, his wife to be interrogated in Kolkata | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed Mamata Banerjee‘s nephew Abhishek Banerjee to be interrogated by Enforcement Directorate in West Bengal in coal theft case.
Banerjee had sought that his questioning be held in Kolkata and not in Delhi, where ED has its headquarters.
Supreme Court has allowed Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee and his wife, Rujira, to be interrogated by ED in Kolkata by giving them an advance 24 hour notice. However, it has said that it would not tolerate any kind of obstruction and interference by state machinery if Enforcement Directorate interrogates Banerjee in Kolkata and has directed the state govt to co-operate with ED and provide protection to its officials.
Earlier on Thursday, the Supreme Court had asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as to why it cannot question Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata instead of Delhi as the politician till now “seems to be just a witness and not a potential accused” in a money laundering case.
The apex court said that it will direct the West Bengal government to provide protection to ED officials in Kolkata so that they can question Banerjee, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, without facing any issue.
Banerjee has also told the top court that he is ready to be probed by the ED in Kolkata.
The Enforcement Directorate had issued summons to Banerjee and his wife Rujira for questioning in the money laundering case, linked to an alleged coal mining scam in West Bengal, registered against them in 2021.
The total ‘proceeds of crime’ generated through the scam has been to the tune of Rs 1,352 crore, according to the agency.
